Found family is the trope in which a group of unrelated characters forms a family by choice and loyalty rather than blood: a crew, team, guild, or household that becomes its members' true home. It is the emotional core of many ensemble series.
Found family is the emotional architecture of the ensemble series. A pirate crew, a guild, a club, a unit of soldiers, a household of strays: the group forms by choice or circumstance, and the story's deepest stakes become the group's survival as a group. Members quarrel, leave, and return; the table they eat at matters more than the bloodlines the cast left behind.
The trope answers something real about its audience. Long anime are consumed over months and years, and viewers live with a cast the way the cast lives with each other. Found family gives that attachment a name inside the story, and it explains why betrayals and farewells inside the unit outrank world-ending threats in fans' memories.
The term itself is fandom vocabulary, imported into general use, but the pattern is as old as the picaresque. On this site it appears as an interpretive lens, never as a quizzed fact: a story either builds its crew into a family or it does not, and saying so is criticism, not canon.
In use"A crew of runaways and strays who eat together, fight together, and sail together is a found family."
