Hiatus

A hiatus is an interruption in a work's publication or broadcast: a manga that stops appearing in its magazine for a period, or a series that pauses longer than its planned schedule. The fact of a hiatus is publication history; its causes are the creator's private business.

Hiatuses have many causes in a deadline industry and almost none of them are the public's business. A series pauses; a return date is announced or is not; the work resumes or, occasionally, closes early. What is on the record is the publication pattern itself, and that pattern is all this site will ever state.

The word needs care because it does double duty. A planned break between cours of an anime is a schedule, not a hiatus. A manga hiatus is an interruption of serialization, and its length changes a series' shape: readers age alongside long-running works, and returns after years away are genuine cultural events.

The blocklist rule for this vertical is absolute: no speculation about a creator's health or reasons, ever, including when the speculation is sympathetic and including when other outlets publish it. A quiz may note that a series returned after a pause. It will never, in a stem, an option, or a factoid, suggest why. Long-running series accumulate their pauses into their shape, and veteran readers plan around them the way they plan around cours: the calendar of a beloved series is a shared fan skill.
