Tactics

Gegenpressing

German for counter-pressing. The tactic of immediately pressing the opposition the moment you lose the ball, before they can organize. Jurgen Klopp made this famous at Dortmund and Liverpool. The idea is that the best moment to win the ball back is in the five seconds after losing it, when the other team is disorganized. Requires immense fitness and buy-in from every player.

"They lost it in midfield and within three seconds had it back. That's the gegenpress at work."
