A boss rush is a mode or sequence in which the player fights a series of bosses back to back, usually with limited healing or recovery between fights. It tests mastery of encounters already learned individually.
A single boss fight tests whether you can learn one pattern. A boss rush tests whether you retained every pattern, and whether you can manage health, ammunition, and focus across all of them without the recovery the main game normally provides. Bosses usually appear in their original order or in escalating difficulty, and one defeat commonly restarts the whole sequence rather than the single fight.
The mode has roots in games structured around boss encounters from the start. Mega Man games let players refight the robot masters before the final stages, and later series formalised the idea as a dedicated unlockable mode. Treasure games such as Gunstar Heroes and Alien Soldier were built almost entirely from boss fights, showing the format could carry a full game rather than only an extra challenge.
Modern games use boss rushes as endgame content and community competition. Clear times are compared, no damage clears are prized, and developers add the mode in updates because it reuses finished encounters in a form skilled players actively request. It rewards the exact knowledge that repeated farming and checkpoint practice build up over a first run.
