A cooldown is the enforced waiting period after using an ability, item, or action before it can be used again. Cooldowns are usually shown as a timer or a sweeping clock face over the ability icon.
Cooldowns exist to stop the strongest move from becoming the only move. Without them, a player would fire their most powerful ability on repeat and ignore the rest of their kit. A timer forces rotation: use the big ability now and it is unavailable for the next exchange, so timing becomes a decision with a cost. Short cooldowns shape moment to moment play, while long cooldowns on ultimate abilities shape whole fights around when they are spent and when they return.
Games communicate the wait visually. Icons grey out, fill clockwise, flash when ready, and sometimes play a sound, because a player in combat cannot read numbers. Some designs add cooldown reduction as a stat, letting builds trade raw power for more frequent ability use, and some abilities refund part of their cooldown on a kill or a precise hit to reward clean execution.
The word also describes the passive waiting itself. Players say an ability is on cooldown, or that they are waiting for cooldowns before starting a boss, treating the timers as a shared resource the whole group manages together across a fight.
