50-40-90 Club

The 50-40-90 club is the informal group of players who have shot at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three, and 90 percent from the free throw line in one season.

The 50-40-90 club is the shooter's triple crown, with no trophy and enormous prestige. The thresholds are round and brutal: make at least half your field goals, at least forty percent of your three pointers, and at least ninety percent of your free throws across a full season, with minimum attempt requirements, and you join a list that stayed in single digits for decades.

Its membership is a quiz answer waiting to be asked. Steve Nash did it four times, Larry Bird twice, and the full roll includes names like Dirk Nowitzki, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant, a cross era argument about pure shooting settled by arithmetic. The free throw leg eliminates most candidates, which is why high volume stars who live at the line rarely complete the set even in their best shooting years.

The club's season minimums matter: the league sets qualifying thresholds for attempts in each category, so a hot month does not count. Variants exist at other levels of the sport with adjusted thresholds, but the NBA version's numbers are fixed in fan memory as the standard. It is the record family's most elegant member, three percentages that together describe the complete shooter.
