Point Forward

A point forward is a forward who takes on the primary playmaking duties usually assigned to a point guard, initiating the offence and distributing the ball.

The point forward breaks the sport's oldest organizational chart. Instead of the smallest player bringing the ball up and initiating plays, a forward, with a size advantage over every guard, handles the ball, calls the sets, and creates shots for others. The term was coined in the 1980s, most often attached to Paul Pressey in Milwaukee, and popularized when Scottie Pippen ran Chicago's triangle offence from the forward spot.

The concept's fullest expression came later. LeBron James spent a career as a forward with a point guard's assist totals and responsibilities, and playmaking forwards became a standard roster goal rather than a novelty, valued because a six foot eight initiator cannot be pressured the way a small guard can and sees passing lanes over the defence.

For quizzes the point forward is a bridge term between positions and tactics. It explains why some forwards lead their teams in assists, why certain offences list no true point guard, and why the assist records of forwards are compared across eras. Like the two way player label, it names a job rather than a roster slot, and the job is: the offence starts with you.
